Leo de María, new Artistic Director of Piano Youth Experience
I am truly honored that my parents, Leonel and María, have entrusted me with the Artistic Direction of Piano Youth Experience. This course holds a special place in my heart, as it was created by them with the hope that my brother and I would be inspired to play the piano. Needless to say, they succeeded in their goal, as today, the piano is my work, my passion, and my life. I fell in love with the piano through this course, and I have never parted from it since. Because of this, and due to the life-changing experience it gave me, Piano Youth Experience will always occupy a special place in my heart.
I certainly remember the classes with the wonderful teachers, but I had my teacher at home every day. What truly made the difference for me was the camaraderie and the experience of living together during that magical week in summer with my peers. I believe that, as children, we are often more motivated by our peers than by any adult. We spoke about the same things, shared the same interests beyond the piano, but there was something different about those kids I admired so much for their musical talent—something that, over time, I began to understand.
They had a purpose, a dream to fight for, and it was from their drive, their determination, their healthy ambition toward the instrument, and even their humility and patience in the learning process that I learned so much. Regardless of the path each student must take with the piano, I believe these are invaluable lessons, not just for music, but for life itself.

In addition to being inspired by the students, I made lifelong friendships that continue to this day, and this would not have been possible without the “community” atmosphere that the leadership worked so hard to create.
It is our purpose to continue the legacy of my parents, while certainly bringing new ideas to improve it. New initiatives such as the workshops “Stage Presence” and “The Piano and my Future” are specifically designed to educate and inform both students and families about aspects that are not typically covered in the classroom, yet are crucial for the future of our young artists. Just as Moni Herreros, I was fortunate to have a pianist father who guided me every step of the way as a musician. However, this is not the case for every child or young person. That’s why we are committed to advising and helping you in every way possible, so that the steps your children take today will help them build a full and happy future.
I eagerly look forward to welcoming you all!
